Our Washington State group has been invading the Lake Shastina Golf Resort almost every year since 1992, and some of our “Elders” since the early 60’s. How this place has been kept a secret, I’ll never know. Since then several group members have relocated to various places across the country, including myself. Lake Shastina Golf Resort has become our yearly “Gathering Place”.
When I hear the term “golf resort” images of high-rise condos, expensive restaurants and exorbitant green fees come to mind. And that is usually accompanied by valets, stuffy golf pros, $5 beers from the beverage cart, and the obligatory cart Nazi. Lake Shastina Golf Resort is none of that!
Located just 7 miles north of Weed, CA or about 1 1/2 hours south of the Oregon border, it’s only a 10 hour drive from Seattle with lots of places to get a quick 18 holes in on the way down to make it an easy 2 day trip. Although situated adjacent to Lake Shastina the most prominent visible feature is snow covered Mt. Shasta. I think I have more pictures of Mt. Shasta than I do of the golf course!
We usually get the 5 night/6 day package which includes unlimited golf, range balls and pro-shop discounts. Talk to our good friend Nancy Turner (800) 358-4653 for rates and availability. 1 bedroom condos located on property, that can sleep anywhere from 2 to 6 people, are the way to go because once you’re there, the only thing you’re driving is your golf cart! Local rental houses are also available but that would require actually driving in your car to get to the course everyday.
Course conditions, amenities and staff have all improved with several changes of owners and management over the years. The gravel bunkers have been replaced with eye-pleasing red cinder which compliments the tall evergreens lining a lot of the fairways on the front nine. The fairways are more defined and the greens have always been smooth and receptive.
Having five par 3’s and five par 5’s creates more of an adventure on the course they call the “Magnificent Monster”. Water comes into play on 6 holes including the diabolical 530 yard par 5 10th hole where the 3rd shot is all carry to the green. Another tough water hole is the 175 yard par 3 where most of the green is also protected by a pond.
The signature hole is the par 3 140 yard hole, which also plays over water, and looks directly into Mt. Shasta. My personal favorite is the 145 yard par 3 13th hole which actually requires carrying the pond in front and avoiding Lake Shastina over the back of the green. Even though the white tees play at oveer 6200 yards, the big hitters in our group love this course as all of the par 5’s can be reached in two (with some risk) and a few of the par 4’s in one. This makes for a great “scramble” tournament course.
The restaurant doesn’t have a huge menu but what it serves up is excellent. I recommend any of the salads for that quick lunch between rounds, and the pizza rivals pretty much anything you’ve ever had. Most of the time you’ll find us out on the patio enjoying the sun and a cool breeze in the summertime. The bar is well stocked for just about anything you can think of. The Margaritas are especially good but you can’t leave until you’ve tried one of Vickie’s famous Bloody Mary’s. Hit’s the spot on the morning turn and will last most of the back nine.
The rest of the staff is very nice and helpful. The pro shop is a little sparse in it’s offerings but if you absolutely need something (like your driver shaft replaced) they can usually get it done by the next day. The pro shop is fairly tolerant about some of the weird tourneys and events we plan and help us have the most fun possible. (Try playing a 5 hole modified scotch scramble dressed as your favorite Caddyshack character!)
We did not see any on-course rangers this year but they really aren’t needed. We played most of our rounds in under 4 hours and a few in the morning lasted only 3 hours 15 minutes for our foursome. We play all day and sometimes lose track of time and bring the carts in a little late. Our bad, but if you leave a few bucks on the score card clip, the cart guys will be much appreciative.
Now you know why we keep going back to the Lake Shastina Golf Resort every year. We keep thinking it couldn’t be more fun than the last year but it always is!
