This course is no where near Denver and not even close to what I would call Littleton, Colorado. That’s a good thing. Arrowhead Golf Club is located about 40 minutes southwest of Denver proper, and actually in Roxborough Park. The key features of Arrowhead are the large red rock outcroppings, which you just can’t take your eyes off of. It’s like playing golf in the Garden of the Gods.
While I was living in Colorado I played this course 4 times at various green fee rates. The last time was in August, 2010 right after they started the All Inclusive program.
Arrowhead Golf Club is proud to introduce, ‘All Inclusive. All the Time. All Arrowhead.‘ Each and every time you visit Arrowhead Golf Club this year, you will be treated to a one-of-a-kind, all inclusive experience. Our All Arrowhead program includes 18 holes of golf, cart and range balls. Also, complimentary non-alcoholic beverages and meal service throughout the day in the clubhouse and on the golf course. Paired with our unique golf course setting, this is a Colorado Experience that just can’t be missed!
What a great deal! For our $67 green fee, we also ate breakfast, dinner with appetizers, snacks and non-alcoholic beverages from both the cart and the bar at the turn. Oh, and that included 18 holes of golf too. My wife rode along without golfing and got everything but the golf for an additional $25. (prices may vary from what we paid then)
To tell you the truth I don’t really remember how I played those rounds. I really didn’t care, I was just happy to be there. I’m sure I spent most of the time gawking at the scenery and taking photos of the scenery.
My favorite holes on the front nine are the 3,4,5 stretch. Hole #3 is a 190 yard par 3 that overlooks the city of Denver in the background. The pin placement can get nasty if tucked in the back, almost between the rocks. Number 4 has a couple of unique features with a smallish rock in the fairway and the second shot hit over the local access road to the green. Hole number 5 will dare the long hitters to drive the green over a 10 story rock. Good luck with that because if you can clear the rock you’ll likely end up in one of several green side bunkers.
The back nine has several really cool holes along with a few par 5’s that will kick your butt. After stocking up with free goodies at the turn (remember, all inclusive …) #10 is a downhill par 4 that always has some kind of wildlife roaming around on it. The par 3 number 11 hole will have you staring in awe at the huge red rock behind the green. 12 and 16 are the par 5 butt kickers but once you get past 12, look forward to playing two of the coolest holes on the planet. 13 is a par 3 downhill 170 yard hole that will make it hard to choose a club as there is water in the back of the green and all sorts of stuff to mess with your ball in front.
Number 14 has several tee boxes to choose from but, even if you don’t want to hit from the back tees, you have to drive up and take a look at the shot you have. Even though we usually play from the “Arrowhead” tees we always play this hole from the “Black Bear” tees. Your tee shot must pass between a narrow opening between 2 rocks, clear the lake and land somewhere in the fairway on the other side. You can chew off as much angle as you want so be careful here. While the ladies in your group are watching you guys try to clear the rocks and the water, they get to tee off from an island tee box.
The last few holes are kind of anti-climatic compared to the holes you just played but remember that you still have dinner to look forward to (all inclusive, all inclusive). The service staff was a little understaffed but very friendly and accommodating, and the food is very good.
If you’re ever in the Denver, Colorado area Arrowhead Golf Club is a must play for any serious golfer.
