Corte Bella Golf Club in Sun City West, AZ opened in 2004 and I’m a little annoyed at myself for waiting until 2011 to finally play this great course. Although it’s been a private club, I’ve had plenty of chances to play it. August 2011 has been a record breaking month for heat which makes it difficult to be outside for any length of time (110+). General play is down everywhere so sometimes if you can bear the heat, you can get a good deal on a great course. Someone handed me some coupons to play Corte Bella for a great price which included a $10 voucher for a meal. I’m in!
After being greeted by gate security the course is just a few blocks into the community of Corte Bella. As we parked, guest services rushed out with a cart to haul our clubs into the clubhouse area where iced towels and logo cups were waiting to be filled with ice and whatever else. (We got to keep the cups!) After checking in with the friendly counter person we were invited to practice on the range with the included range balls. The putting green was large and gave us a hint that we might be seeing some big breaks on the greens on the course. The only thing I didn’t see was anywhere to practice chipping.
Since the first tee is across the road, the starter informed us when we should head over when it was our turn. With dew still on the ground and a slightly cloudy sky, it was a perfect morning for golf.
Even though the course is built within a residential community, most of the houses were quite a ways off the course and didn’t really encroach on the course. I hardly noticed and didn’t hit any houses that day! It pretty much plays like a desert course in my opinion. The fairways were generously wide on most holes but with strategically placed hazards to mess with your ball. The course was in great shape with lush fairways and fairly smooth greens that proved the practice green right in that undulations were standard on most greens.
All the par 3’s were especially fun, scenic, and challenging. I’m not sure if they have a signature hole but I would vote for the par 3 #12 or maybe the approach shot to the par 4 #14 which were my favorite holes. Boredom on any hole was not an issue as there were challenges everywhere.
The 18th came too quickly as we then headed into the luxurious clubhouse and restaurant to use our $10 meal voucher. The food was great and they had some interesting beers on tap as well. We noted that we should try to make it out here for dinner sometime.
Green fees are usually around $75 – $85 and memberships are still offered so I guess I would classify Corte Bella as semi-private. You can find tee times and deal through both GolfHub and GolfNow so the public is welcome. I put this course easily within my top ten list of Arizona courses to play. Be sure to check out Corte Bella Golf Club soon!
